That's Not So Surprising

I was going to comment on the new episodes of Rebels today, but when thinking about them, another thought came to mind.  Still, if you haven't watched the newest episodes of Rebels, you may want to stay away from this episode for now.  You've been warned!

Black Panther

Spoiler Alert! Do not listen to today's episode until after you've seen Black Panther!  Why? Because I link the latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe to the past and the future of Star Wars films!  Really!

LT12P Conversations #0003

Just like yesterday, (and probably tomorrow too), I have another episode of LT12P Conversations.  Today I talk with Mike Ehmcke about things that bother us in the realm of Star Wars Fandom.  (Yup, I'm a curmudgeon!).  You probably know Mike from his podcasts WeBeGeeks, Mightly Marvel Geeks and one of my favorites, Wookiee Radio.  Be sure to check out his shows as well.

Remember, LT12P Conversations is longer than the normal Less Than 12 Parsecs episode.  This show clocks in around 25 minutes!  Enjoy!

LT12P Conversations #0002

As everyone knows, Less Than 12 Parsecs IS the fastest Star Wars podcast in the galaxy!  My goal is to produce episodes that are roughly 5 minutes in length.

Well, last month, I started dipping my toes into some long form content. And I'm back again with another episode of...  LT12P Conversations!

The premise of these conversations is that I sit down with one star wars fan, and I will ask them one Star Wars questions, and then we will discuss that one Star Wars topic.  It's going to be a deep dive into the nerdier side of Star Wars minutia.  And, I do not give my guests the questions in advance of the conversation, I like to make them think on their feet!

Two caveats however...  Because this show IS under the LT12P banner, it is still going to be shorter/quicker/faster then most other Star Wars podcasts out there.  We are shooting for a 20 or 30 minute length, no more.

Also, even though I say one question, one topic, that's not completely true.  Our conversations always take us off on tangents and down hyperspace lanes we never expected to explore.  That's all part of the fun of geeking out over Star Wars!

So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this conversation I recorded two weeks ago with Evan Pettit, the mastermind behind one of the greatest Star Wars themes Twitter accounts, @Rick_Olie_Quote.  What question did I ask him?  Well, you'll have to listen to find out!  And after you've listened, go follow Evan on Twitter!  Thank you and enjoy!

Jedi Library Wish List

Today's episode is over 7 minutes in length, but just barely.  Normally, I do not allow myself to cross this line, but since I have not posted this week, I will allow this infraction of the LT12P bi-laws, just this one time! ;-)

Today's topic was suggested by my friend and yours, Mr. Dennis Keithly, co-host of Starships, Sabers and Scoundrels.  If you have a suggestions for a LT12P episode, please do not hesitate to let me know! I'm always open to new ideas!

So here you go, my wish list of five items I would love to add to my Jedi Library.  Enjoy!

Responding To The Responces

So, I received a lot of feedback about yesterday's episode.  Thank you!  But...

I'm not sure I really got my point across yesterday, so today I try to clarify the situation.  But...

I may have just made things even more confusing, because I did not script today's episode.  I just started talking, and well, that's not always a good thing!

Anyway, please listen and let me know what you think.  Maybe tomorrow I'll do a response to your responses about my responding!

Gut Reaction: SOLO Trailer... Kinda

Here are my initial thoughts on the new trailers for SOLO.

Sorta, kinda.

I start on this topic, but actually spend most of the episode discussing another topic that's been on my mind quite a bit recently...  Is Star Wars still special?  Have a listen to hear what I mean, and then let me know what you think!

Connections or Crazy?

OK, either I've discovered something cool, or I'm just crazy.  I seemed to have found a connection between the Lego Star Wars The Freemaker Adventures cartoon show and the new hyper reality experience, Secrets of the Empire!  Have a listen and let me know what you think!

AND, if you are able to spoil the story for me and tell me if I am right or wrong, please do!  Email me at TwelveParsecsPodcast@gmail.com, or leave a comment below!  Thanks!

10 Stoopid Questions with Evan Pettit from @Rick_Olie_Quote

No guest of the show gets away that easy!  As you know, I force them all to sit through my 10 Stoopid Questions.  Ten questions, and they only have 10 seconds to answer each one!

Even Pettit is back again, and I throw ten Ric Olie themed questions.  How does he do?  Have a listen and find out!

PS - Don't forget to follow Even on Twitter at @Rick_Olie_Quote !

Evan Pettit IS Rick Olie!

My enjoyment with the Twitter account @Rick_Olie_Quote continues.  I apologize if you've grown bored with this, but I have a few more episodes left in me on this topic!

Today on the show I sit down and chat with Evan Pettit, the man behind this account.  In just a few minutes he shares with me the origin of the site, we debate the pronunciation of Olie, and he shares a great story about his run in with actor Ralph Brown.

And of course, Evan will be back tomorrow to sit through my 10 Stoopid Questions, which will be all about your favorite pilot from Naboo, Ric Olie!

PS - Yes, I did mean to spell Rick with a K in the show title.  No need to bug me about it! :-p

Change Can Be A Bad Thing Too!

Today's episode is a companion piece to yesterdays show.  Yesterday, I listed my five favorite changes made to the Original Trilogy over the years.  Today's episode is the five worst changes made to the Original Trilogy over the years!

BUT, it's not my list.  Nope! It's from a listener!  (In fact, way back when I started LT12P, I mentioned that anyone can come on, and anyone can submit their own episode.  This is the first time someone has taken me up on that offer!)

This list is from the mastermind behind @Rick_Olie_Quote, who will be the guest on tomorrow's episode!  So, please enjoy this slightly different episode of LT12P, and then come back tomorrow to meet the man behind it!

Change Can Be A Good Thing!

Star Wars fans like to complain.  For 21 years now, we've been discussing, debating, and yes, complaining about the changes made to the Original Trilogy.  So today, I thought I would look back and share with you five changes that have been made that I think are changes for the better.  Yes, I have some positive things to say about the tinkering the George Lucas has done to these films!  Have a listen and let me know what you think.

Hey, big thanks to @Rick_Olie_Quote from Twitter for the inspiration for today's episode.  Ric will actually be hosting the show tomorrow to share the changes he DOESN'T like and will tell us why.  And fingers crossed, I hope to have Ric on the show next week!  In the meantime, please follow him on Twitter for some funny stuff!

The Rebel Chatter Podcast Presents...
A Less Than 12 Parsecs Production...
In Cooperation With Rebel Cause Lancaster...
The Less Than 12 Rebels Fan Film Review Show with Kaden & Tim!

What is this all about?  Well, back in episode #0165 of Less Than 12 Parsecs, I was talking about all the little group of Star Wars fandom.  I called them Star Wars sub-communities.  And I wondered if there was a community of Star Wars fan film, film critics.  (I have since found out there is!)

Well, after I published the episode, I received a message on Facebook from Kaden Stetler from the Rebel Chatter Podcast.  He thought the idea of a "Siskel & Ebert" for Star Wars fan films would make a great podcast!  So, we got together two weeks later, and voila!  This episode is our take on Star Wars fan film, film criticism.  This is our first episode, and we hope to do one or two of these a month, if our schedules allow.

Here are the films we review in this episode...

10 Stoopid Questions with Kaden Stetler from the Rebel Chatter Podcast

No guest on Less Than 12 Parsecs escapes that easily!  I make them all come back for a second episode where they have to sit through my 10 Stoopid Questions.  Ten questions, and they only have ten seconds to answer each one.  Thankfully for them, there are no real right or wrong answers.  Have a listen and hear how Kaden, my guest from yesterday, did!

Podcasters Spotlight: Kaden Stetler from Rebel Chatter

I haven't done a Podcasters Spotlight episode in a while, so here we go!  It's five minutes with Kaden Stetler from the Rebel Chatter podcast.  Kaden talks about the charity work he does with his podcast, what it's like to work with his dad, and reveals the new show he just started working on with an awesome new partner! ;-)

And like all Star Wars podcasters I invite on LT12P, I make Kaden come back for a second episode, and make him sit through my 10 Stoopid Questions.  Ten questions, and only ten seconds to answer each one.  Look for that later in the week!

Acting! (The OT Edition)

As you know, the actors in Star Wars are just that... Actors!  And while we love them in their Star Wars roles, they have also played other great parts in other great films.  In today's episode, I take a look at the main actors from the Original Trilogy, and share my favorite performances of theirs, from other films. -- Check back later in the week when I cover the Prequels, Sequels and Stand-Alone Films.

PS - I apologize for the sound quality on this one.  I had some technical difficulties today.  Too many darn gremlins in the gears, messing things up for me!

PPS - This week, I was invited onto the Nerfherder Council Podcast to chat about Episode VIII.  It was a lot of fun, and I didn't embarrass myself too much!  Please, check it out at... http://nerfherdercouncil.com/shows/the-last-jedi-roundtable-wtf-moments-nhc-january-21-2018/

My Star Was Addiction

Hi, my name is Tim, and I’m an addict.  Today, I take a serious look at my Star Wars addiction.  They said admitting you have a problem is the first step towards recovery, so maybe, hopefully, this episode will be the beginning of my journey.  And no, I’m not joking around here, please have a listen to today’s episode and you’ll learn more about my problem.

LT12P Conversation #0001

As everyone knows, Less Than 12 Parsecs IS the fastest Star Wars podcast in the galaxy!  My goal is to produce episodes that are only 5 minutes in length.

Well, starting today, I'm dipping my toes into some long form content.  Welcome to the first episode of LT12P Conversations!

So, here's the premise...  Every week, or every other week, I will sit down with one star wars fan, and I will ask them one Star Wars questions, and then we will  discuss that one Star Wars topic.  It's going to be a deep dive into the nerdier side of Star Wars minutia.

Oh, and, just to let you know, I do not give my guests the questions in advance of the conversation, I like to make them think on their feet!

Two caveats however...  Because this show IS under the LT12P banner, it is still going to be shorter/quicker/faster then most other Star Wars podcasts out there.  We are shooting for a 20 or 30 minute length, no more.

Also, even though I say one question, one topic, that's not completely true.  I am more then certain our conversations will take us off on tangents and down hyperspace lanes we never expected to explore.  That's all part of the fun of geeking out over Star Wars!

So, sit back, relax, and enjoy this conversation I had with my good friend and yours, Mr. Ryan Dassing?  What question did I ask him?  Well, you'll have to listen to find out!

Star Wars Sub-Communities

Today I was thinking about all the different types of Star Wars fans, and Star Wars fandoms.  So I started to create a list of five wacky and weird, (and purely imagine by me), groups of Star Wars fans. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought that these groups of Star Wars fans and fandoms could either be A; already a reality, or B; be something that some people might be into for real, but who just haven’t come together as a Star Wars sub-community yet.    So, while this list may seem like a joke on the surface, I think it might not be for some.

Two of the things I want to mention. First off I did not script this episode, I just recorded it on the spot, all extemporaneous like, and it shows.  And that’s why this episode is a little long. (My original edit was 15 mins long,)  Sorry about that.  Secondly, I don’t know if “sub-communities “ is really the proper word to use here, but I’m not a sociologist, so I’m going with it,  thanks.

Sunday, January 7, 2018

Much Appreciated!

Today’s episode is one of those episodes I hate doing, because it’s not really about Star Wars, but rather it’s about the podcast itself.  That said, I have a really good reason for talking about LT12P today. Really!  Please take five or six minutes to find out why!

Weekly News Roundup for January 5th, 2018

Hey, I'm bringing back a classic... It's the Less Than 12 Parsecs Weekly News Roundup!  Can you believe I haven't don't one of these since June 9th!  That's crazy!

For those of you who don't remember the Weekly News Roundup, what I do is once a week, I recap and review all the Star Wars headlines that grabbed my attention in the previous seven days, and I share a quick thought or opinion about each story.  This is Less Than 12 Parsecs, we don't have time for indepth analysis, and LT12P shouldn't be your source for Star Wars news.  That said, it's fun to recap the weeks big headlines!

The Weekly News Roundup is always unscripted, so please bear with me as I babble.  Normally I try to keep these episodes between 3 and 7 minutes, but I am a little out of practice and went on for 9 minutes.  Sorry!  But thanks for listening anyway, and please enjoy!

2018: The Star Wars Year Ahead

So, what can we expect from our favorite franchise in the year ahead?  Well, here are five predictions I have for 2018.  Be warned, these are made with tongue firmly planted in cheek, so if any of these actually come true, I’ll eat a Porg!  Enjoy!

2017: The Star Wars Year In Review

Less Than 12 Parsecs is not a news podcast.  Sure, we cover the big headlines when everyone is talking about them, and I occasionally recap the top headlines of the week that grabbed my attention, but by no means is this a Star Wars news podcast.

That said, with the year winding down, today I am looking back the last 12 months and recapping what I think were the biggest stories in Star Wars this year.  And all in 5 minutes or so!

Happy Star Wars Holidays!

Since it's that time of year when people celebrate a wide variety of holidays, in today's episode I take a look at the special occasions commemorated in the Star Wars galaxy.  Yeah, there's more out there than just Life Day!

I hope that you and yours have a wonderful holiday season, no matter how you celebrate this time of year!

Gut Reaction: Star Wars Adventures

After spending too much time online this past week, I needed something fun, simple and pure Star Wars.  And I think I found it in the Star Wars Adventures comic book published by IDW.  Here is my mini-review, in only 5 minutes!

ALSO... I am experimenting with a video edition of the show.  I have a great deal of technical details to work through first, but here ya go, this is my "rough draft".  Please, let me know what you think!

Chatting About The Last Jedi

Today's episode is a Bonus Episode, because it is longer than 7 minutes.  Waaaaay longer!

I sat down with friend of the show, Mr. Ryan Dassing, and we just nerded out together over the newest film in our favorite saga, The Last Jedi!  We're not all that deep, and I'm not that articulate, but if you like listening to fanboys gush, then this is the show for you!  Beware, here there be spoilers!

AND, if this episode wasn't enough for you, I can be found doing the exact same thing with my old pal Mr. Jason Collier, over on my old show, The Expanded Fandomverse.  It's another hour of nerdy chatter amongst friends!

The Last Jedi Review

Today’s episode is more than just my typical Gut Reaction, it’s the closest thing to a review I can accomplish in under five minutes.  Warning, spoilers ahead!

The Last Jedi: Declan McMahon's Initial Thoughts

Just moments after we got out of the theater tonight, after seeing the premier of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, I turned on the recorder to get my son's first thoughts on the film.  I'll be working on my own review this weekend, but for now, here is what Declan, the 14 year old casual Star Wars fan, thought of the film.

Warning, spoilers ahead!

Gut Reaction: Forces of Destiny

I'm a little late on this one (late in posting a new episode and late in talking about this topic) but today I finally get around to reviewing this years animated Star Wars micro-series.  Have a listen to hear what I though, and then let me know if you agree or disagree.  I wanna know!  ;-)

The Last Jedi Predictions

David Frishkorn from The Cocky Cockpit Podcast put the word out that their show was looking for people to submit their Top Five predictions for The Last Jedi.  So, I sent him my thoughts.  But, I am also going to share those same thoughts with you here now!

-And even though your listening to them now, please be sure to check out The Cocky Cockpits prediction episode.  I promise you it will be fun! In an adult humor sort of way! ;-)

Action Figure Number 14... Maybe.

Hey there, I haven't added a new classic Kenner Star Wars Action figure to my collection in quite some time, so that's what I am going to go today.  I think.

I received a package from the great Ryan Dassing, and I am going to open it up live on the show today (on video even!) and see what's inside.  Let's find out together!

To recap, here are the figures I already have...

ANH Princess Leia
Hoth Luke
Hoth Rebel Soldier
Hoth Rebel Commander
AT-AT Driver
Walrus Man
Imperial Royal Guard

If you have a figure to sell me, or send me (I won't say no to freebies!), please let me know!  I'm looking for loose, clean, near-mintish figures, preferably with their accessories!

The Greatest Of All Time!

Over the weekend, I read a fun debate on Twitter.  People where trying to decide who was the greatest pilot in all of Star Wars.  I really enjoyed the discussion, and it gave me a lot to think about.  So, today, after much thought, I've decided who I think is the best pilot in the galaxy.  Please take 5 minutes to hear my conclusion!

Gobble Gobble Gobble

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  In what I hope will become an annual tradition lasting many years into the future, todays episode is a list of some of the things in the world of Star Wars I am happy for.  I did this last year (which you can listen to HERE), and am doing it again, this time with a new items of thankfulness! (That makes sense, right?)  Enjoy!

The Annual Entertainment Weekly Star Wars Issue

Have you read the newest issue of Entertainment Weekly? The annual issue that previews the new Star Wars film?  Well, I haven't. And I haven't watched any of the new commercials that are out there for The Last Jedi either. Why?  Well, take four minutes to learn why!

Gut Reaction: Battlefront 2

I had preordered Star Wars Battlefront 2, which gave me early access to the game.  So, today's episode is a bit of my personal history with Star Wars video games, along with my initial thoughts on BF2 (which was officially released today!).  And I keep it spoiler free, so feel free to listen even if you haven't play it yet.  Enjoy!

Gut Reaction: Star Wars Rebels: Season 4, Episode 9 "Rebel Assault"

As you know, I'm not much of a reviewer, but that said, from time to time, I like to give you my "Gut Reaction" about something new in the world of Star Wars.  So, here is are my thoughts on the mid-season finale of Star Wars Rebels that aired last night, as well as some opinions about the season as a whole so far this year, and where I think it may go next.  Be warned, there are spoilers ahead, so do not listen to this until after you've watched the episode!  Enjoy!

The Star Wars Guy vs The Jerk

Are you like me, and are you known as "The Star Wars Guy" among your groups of friends, family and acquaintances?  Well, I'm guessing a lot of us are.  Anyway, since I proudly accept this label, I get a lot of Star Wars questions.  But the other day, this jerk I know, and he is a jerk, started asking me some questions.  It was like I was on the hot spot in a game of "10 Stoopid Questions"!  (Note to self, bring back this segment.).  Sadly, I did not record this conversation, but today's episode is me telling you the tale of this kinda odd interaction.  Enjoy!

Big News!

Yesterday, BIG news in the world of Star Wars broke.  And as required by Article 4, Subsection B, Paragraph 17c of the Star Wars Podcasters Code, I am required to comment upon it.  Unfortunately, the "real world" prevented me from posting this right away. So, here ya go, better late than never!

More EU Refrences Please

As a fan of the old Expanded Universe, I love whenever Star Wars elements that are branded "Legends", make it back into canon.  We've seen a lot of this thanks to Star Wars Rebels.  For example, the Noghri assassin Rukh has just made this leap.

Well, after this week's episodes, it got me to thinking... What other old EU elements would like to see referenced on the screen, be it television or the movies?  So, are five ideas of mine.  Mind you, these aren't necessarily things to build a story around, just ideas I'd like to see referenced in canon.  Enjoy!

The Next 10 Years Of Star Wars Story Telling

Last week, Kathleen Kennedy mentioned on The Star Wars Show that the Lucasfilm Story Group is currently working on laying the groundwork for the next ten years of Star Wars stories.  And while it is fun to speculate what those stories may be, I'm interested in the new and interesting ways Lucasfilm will tell them.

Beyond the normal way of telling tales, such as novels, comics, television show and games, what other story telling tools could we see in the next decade?  Here are 5 possible ideas I came up with!  Enjoy!

The LT12P Fan Cave!

Part of what I was doing while Less Then 12 Parsecs was on hiatus was converting part of my basement into a "fan cave".  (Thank you to Ryan Dassing for that moniker!). This is not a typical "finished basement" as you often find in suburban American homes.  No, instead, what I did was cordoned off a corner of the basement, laid down a false floor, and put up four walls.  Basically, I made a room to call my own.

A little history here...  when my wife and I purchased our home, it was plenty big enough for the two of us.  Compared to the apartments we had shared, this place was darn near palatial!  In fact, we both had extra rooms we called our own.  Not bedrooms, but dens.  Studies.  Man-caves. (call them what you will).  It was great!

Then, the kids came along...

It's amazing how much room kids, and all their stuff, takes up!

So, I gave up my room for my daughter, and told myself that "someday" I'll get that space back.

Well, I grew tired of waiting for "someday" to come, so... I went into the basement, and made a corner of it my own.  That's the stereotype anyway right?  We nerds all dwell in basements according to popular myth!  ;-)

This post is a series of photos of my build process, followed by a video tour of where things stand now.  The room is about 90% complete I'd say, but I wanted to get this out there.  (I wasn't going to bring LT12P back from hiatus until I was 100% with the room, but I'm not sure that day will ever really come!)

I should have taken more photos, but here is what I remembered to make note of...

The first task was to clear out the junk in the basement.  This was taken after 99% of the stuff we had stored down there was gone.

The wall on the left caused my first problem.  I found that it was leaking, in part because there weren't any rain gutters on that side of the house (that's another story for another day).  So, the first thing I had to do was a bit of masonry.

(I did research for each step of this building process, but I'm not a contractor.  Far from it!   I'm sure I got a lot of it wrong. If you see mistakes on my part, please don't tell me.  My ego doesn't want to hear how poorly a job I did!)

This next photo is of the corner of the basement after the wall had been repaired and painted.  Also, the ceiling has been painted at this point as well.  These first two photos were nearly a month apart.  I had to wait for the cement to cure before I could seal and paint it.  That was unexpected, and annoying, delay.

Next is the framing for the false floor I laid down.  We've had one small basement flood in the 20 years that we've lived here, and I am paranoid it is going to happen again.  I even laid down a heavy tarp on the floor as well, and a tarp along the wall (with heavy foam insulation behind it) to keep out the cold.  I wasn't able to build all the way to the far wall (the white wall in the photo) because of the water-do-hicky-thing.  I don't know what it's called, but that's were the water line comes into the house.  I could have built around it, but I thought better of it.

To keep the draft out (our basement gets quite cool in the winters), I put down a lawyer of fiberglass insulation.

And then next is the ply-wood sub flooring.  Here's a find fact I didn't figure out until I was nailing in the last piece...  One side of this type of ply-wood is smooth, and the other is rough.  Guess which side I have facing up?  Yup, the rough!  Oh well. --- Because I was trying to keep the cost down, I didn't put any additional flooring material over this.  I just painted it with a heavy duty floor paint, and then threw down a could of cheep throw rugs.

Next, I started framing the walls.  Because our house is hold (from the 1920's, and because the basement floor wasn't even close to level, this was a pain.  I swear, every one of these studs was a different length.  So there was lots of measuring, and remeasuring, and then measuring again, to make sure I got things right.  (and even then I didn't always get it right, but I got it "right enough".)

This is after the walls went up, and I put together the first of 11 bookshelves.   I just put up the cheap, 1970's fake wood paneling, and then painted them.  I ended up using 5 different color paints in total.  The ceiling is a very light grey with a satin sheen (to reflect the light, since there are no windows in this room), three of the walls are an eggshell medium grey, then the floor is a matte black.  The desk I installed was a darker, putty grey, and the wall behind that a flat white.  Because every decorator knows the power of an accent wall!  -- I tried to complete this project "on the cheap", but buying all the different paints was my one extravagance.  A treat for myself.

Here are the brackets for the kitchen countertop I purchased, to use as a desk.  I also purchased
the same type of brackets (in a smaller size) to use for a shelf that rings the room.  ---  I screwed up two of these brackets, as they are not quite the correct height.  I think I'll be ok though.

And these here is the countertop, all installed!

And finally, here is a panorama shot of the room, before I started to move in all my books, computer, lights, and Stormtroopers.

All in all, I am quite happy with myself.  I did this project completely on my own.   I believe my wife thinks I am crazy for doing this, (and that I spent too much money), and she is probably right (on both accounts), but life is short, and you have to find ways to enjoy it while you can.  And so, that's what I'm doing!

And now, here is a video tour of the room, now that I have moved in.  Enjoy!
